What and Where is Merzouga?
Merzouga is a small village on the edge of Erg Chebbi — one of Morocco’s largest sand erg, with dunes rising up to 150 metres above the Sahara floor. It sits approximately 560 kilometres southeast of Marrakech, near the Algerian border.
The route from Marrakech passes through some of Morocco’s most cinematic landscapes: the Draa Valley palm oases, the kasbahs of Skoura and Ouarzazate, the road of a thousand kasbahs (N10), and the dramatic Ziz Valley gorges.
Standard 3-Day Itinerary: Marrakech to Merzouga and Back
Day 1: Marrakech to the Draa Valley
Depart Marrakech at 7am via the Tizi n’Tichka pass (2,260m) — the highest paved road in North Africa, with sweeping Atlas panoramas. Stop at the UNESCO-listed Ait Benhaddou (Gladiator, Game of Thrones filming location) before descending into the Draa Valley, a 200km palm oasis following the Draa River. Overnight in a traditional riad in Ouarzazate or Zagora.
Day 2: Draa Valley to Erg Chebbi
Continue east through the Dades Gorges and the Valley of the Roses (famous for rose cultivation in May). Pass through Rissani — the ancestral town of the Moroccan Royal family — before arriving at Merzouga in the late afternoon. Time your arrival for the golden hour: the dunes turn a deep copper-red as the sun drops. At sunset, mount your camel and trek 45 minutes into the dunes to your desert camp.
Night in the Sahara Camp
Traditional camps range from basic shared tents to luxury en-suite canvas suites with proper beds and private bathrooms. All include a Moroccan dinner, live Gnawa music around the campfire, and the extraordinary experience of sleeping under a sky with no light pollution. The Milky Way is visible in full.
Day 3: Sunrise in the Dunes, Return to Marrakech
Wake at 5:30am for sunrise over the dunes — the most photographed moment of any Morocco trip. Trek back to Merzouga, enjoy breakfast, and begin the return journey via the Ziz Valley and the cedar forests of Ifrane (with wild Barbary macaques), arriving in Marrakech by 10–11pm.
